In some cases there may be good reasons to reinvent a product or process - to enhance or improve on it. But reinvention or ‘change for change sake’ is not always the best answer to achieve your business objectives.
New buzzwords or jargon for any process does not mean that the process is either new or better. We take the mystique out of these terms, explaining them in plain terms that you can relate to.
It's human nature to try to find new ways to do something. But seeking new ideas and methods should not mean ignoring the fact that in many cases processes have been developed and designed through years of research and experience.
In scientific research, humans have attempted to change what nature has evolved over aeons or have failed to appreciate that something even has the potential for good.
For example, there have been numerous cases of the intentional introduction of a particular plant variety, animal species or selective disease to correct a perceived problem. Many times these efforts have turned into disasters and certainly failed to produce the desired outcomes.
In contrast, in medieval medicine, leaches were used as a medicinal remedy and to purify the blood. In later times, the field of medicine considered this barbaric and ceased the practice. More recently, research has discovered that leaches excrete highly beneficial enzymes and these creatures are once again being used as a mainstream therapy.
We are not saying new development or investigation should not be performed.
On the contrary, it can and should be done. The point is that it should be done with an honest, open, objective and informed mind.
Business and technology analysis
The Numbers Game – Two Be or not Two Be
One of our Principal Consultants was employed by a major international corporation. One aspect of the job involved taking certain numbers and ‘proving’ a desired outcome. He never failed. The point is that numbers can be represented or analysed in any number of ways. Very often statistical analysis is used to show that items are co-dependent, when in fact they are both co-requisites to a third, unnamed item.
Analysis should be complete and thorough. This is not to say that it should be so exhaustive that we forget about budgets, deadlines and business realities.
It does mean that investigation should be open and potential solutions should not be excluded before their relevance can be ascertained.
Resource audit
What have you already got – or don’t throw out the baby with the bath water
In South America there are coloured tree frogs that, for centuries had their venom used for poison darts. Now scientists use the venom for pain relief.
We seek out and identify all of the resources you have or can have available, and show you how to utilise them. We build on the basis of the years of research and experience that is available.
Vendor and outsourcing assessment
Is what’s on offer, what you need or want – or avoid the bait and switch
Whether you are dealing with one product or selecing multiple vendors or outsourced services, it's essential to make sure you’ve covered all the bases. There are templates for this but they can be difficult to apply to your circumstances without guidance.
We aim to help you ask all the right questions, understand what you’re in the market for and critically assess the answers and information you get back.
And we want you to get what you pay for so that you are not sold on one product but getting something else instead.
