media & communications

overview

Media production and consumption is the fastest growing sector within the creative industries.  In 2006 the global TV market was worth US$333 billion with the film market at US$81 billion. This is set to grow to US$583 billion and US$103 billion, by 2011. The development of the digital content sector including content distributed online and through advertising, mobile communications and computer gaming creates a new platform and catalyst for growth.

The i2010 Strategy of the European Union recognises the content industry as being at the vanguard of the digital revolution and that for European creative industries it offers a great opportunity for innovation and growth.  In 2006 the EU recognised the need for "content for competitiveness" underlining that it is a key priority to strengthen the European content industry and ensure Europe obtains a significant share of the market for all stages of production and distribution.

There is a continuing and growing tendency to centralise key industries in certain cities and regions and this is also true of the media sector.  The concentration of resources in capital cities has tended to draw highly skilled people to these areas.

However, a key factor that has emerged over the last ten years is the reduced barriers to entry in terms of cost and technology.  This has significantly improved the potential for entry into this market for individuals and companies with the right skills regardless of where they are based.
